WebSpinal muscular atrophy is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder of Brown Swiss calves. A mutation in the FVT1 gene is suspected. The first clinical sign of spinal muscular atrophy is weakness of the pelvic limbs at 2–6 weeks of age; calves (most are female) have difficulty getting up and then become recumbent. WebSpinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a disorder affecting the motor neurons—nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement. These cells are located in the spinal cord. Because the muscles cannot respond to signals from the nerves, they atrophy — weaken and shrink — from inactivity. One in every 6,000 babies is born with SMA.
