Web4 Oct 2009 · I hope that's OK. I'm trying to find out the root reason why Detroit Diesel two stroke engines require, to this day, mono-grade engine oil, normally straight 40 weight. Empirical evidience, supported by recommendations from DD, is that the engines last longer between rebuilds using straight weight oil in normal service. Web9 Apr 2013 · Joined. Apr 25, 2011. Since it was written 25 years ago and those aren't as common as some of the lighter weights, can I use something else? I did find a walmart brand but it didn't say if it was a detergent oil.
